Croatian history is complicated. They were occupied by Hungary and Austria for centuries. After WWII, they were under communist rule. In the early 1990s, there was a war between the former Yugoslav states.
There are still signs of the wars and occupations.

Zagreb vs Dalmatian Coast
They say that inland cities such as Zagreb and more formal because of the influence of centuries of occupation by Hungary and Austria. In contract, cities on the Dalmatian Coast are more relaxed and friendly.
Motorways
The government has been building motorways in the last 20 years and so travel from north to south is generally very good. They are still building the motorway in the south of the country near Dubrovnik.
Drinking water
Water in Croatia is very clean. They pride themselves on the quality of their water and say that is perfectly safe to drink tap water.
